"Songs & recordings from the residents of Zomba Maximum Security Prison (Malawi)"--Container. Sung in Chichewa (principally) and English. Title from disc label. Produced by Ian Brennan. Recorded at Zomba Maximum Security Prison, Zomba, Malawi. Program notes by Ian Brennan in English printed on container. In Malawi, children often pay for their mother's crimes. They are born into it, literally, serving the same sentence as their parent. Individuals are often detained for the remainder of their lifetime because they lack funds for a basic legal defense. The Zomba Prison Project has helped free two inmates who were falsely held, and currently have three more cases under review. Through money raised as a result of these recordings, the hope is to continue to fund as many rehearings as possible. |
